40 Days of Generosity
Week Two
Grace - The Indescribable Gift
In Week One we recognized that Generosity is ultimately a matter of the heart, as well as an expression of righteousness. Generosity is a response to God’s gift of grace to us and an example of His character.
In the first 11 chapters of Romans, Paul builds a case for the sinfulness of man which has severed the relationship between God and human beings. We are all equally guilty and in need of restoration.
“There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:22b-23
Paul’s argument is that there are no excuses, regardless of our culture or background or religious practices. Also, in these opening chapters Paul clearly introduces the antidote to sin – which is the grace gift of God found in Jesus Christ.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
This week we will consider the grace of God revealed in the Old Testament and discover it has always been central to the character of God and His relationship with humanity. But first let’s consider this definition of Grace.
Grace (hen) in the Old Testament Hebrew, and (charis) in the New Testament Greek has many facets, however it is typically defined as unmerited (or undeserved) favor. And this favor is a free gift. You can’t earn it by good works, religious behavior, or any other form of payment.
For by grace you have been saved through faith;
And this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God –
Not because of works, lest anyone should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
The Greek word charis is directly linked to the charismatic gifts of the Spirit. Again, Spiritual (grace) gifts are apportioned or given by Christ. (Ephesians 4:7) However, long before the Word became flesh…coming from the Father full of grace and truth, God’s grace was at work throughout creation and throughout the Old Testament. Tune in all week as we explore the Generosity of God demonstrated through grace among His people, Israel.
O Lord, in your mercy reveal our hearts that we might worthily worship you by the way we generously love others! Amen
